Introduction

This course is to explore selected topics in security applied to embedded systems, cyber-physical systems (CPS), and the internet-of-things (IoT). Embedded systems, CPS, and the IoT can be used to economically and effectively monitor and control real-world systems, ranging from implantable life-critical medical devices to large safety-critical infrastructures. But their use can also introduce vulnerabilities easily exploited to gain access to valuable data, alter device functionality, or impose other risks. In this course, we will study vulnerabilities unique to embedded systems, CPS, and IoT that are commonly exploited and also overview techniques and strategies for designing cyber-physical security measures into products. Focus will be on understanding techniques/tools for exploiting vulnerabilities and methodologies for assessing risk, integrating defensive tools for mitigating risk, and addressing future vulnerabilities throughout the product life cycle. Students will gain hands on experience through a course research project aimed at thinking like a “hacker” to gain the skills necessary to create more secure products. Grading will be based on class participation, a paper and/or tool-demo presentation, and a research project.
